Columbus Propeller Rules and Guidelines

Columbus Propeller provides a welcoming environment where everyone can create, learn, tinker and be inspired.

In order to create a safe and welcoming environment for all, the use of the Columbus Propeller is governed by the following policies and procedures.

Members wishing to use the Propeller, or any equipment contained within it, must read and sign this policy before they may do so.

  • The Propeller may only be used for lawful purposes. The public is prohibited from using the Propeller equipment to create material that is:
  • a. Prohibited by local, state, or federal law;
  • b. Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the wellbeing of others (such use may violate the terms of use of the manufacturer);
  • c. In violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, the equipment may not be used to reproduce material that is subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection
  • The Propeller Board of Directors reserves the right to halt, delete, or disallow the creation of items that violate Propeller policies, including the creation of weapons, obscene materials, or illegal items.
  • Members aged 18 and up may use the Propeller independently. Members aged 12-18 may use the Propeller if supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Members must attend a mandatory safety and training certification class in order to use the3D printers, metalworking machines, woodworking tools and any future tools/equipment acquired by Propeller that are determined to require such training.
  • Each piece of equipment has a separate mandatory training class focusing specifically on that equipment which must be attended once. Afterwards the member’s certification will be on file.
  • a. Members may not use the aforementioned equipment until safety training and certification have been completed.
  • b. Members must attend these training sessions in person.
  • When using a tool that does not require specific training, the member is certifying that they are capable of using that tool or equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Propeller equipment may not be left unattended while in use; a member aged 18 or older must stay with it at all times.
  • Propeller is not responsible for personal property or files.
  • Any accidents, including damage to Propeller property, must be reported immediately.
  • Only Propeller-provided materials may be used in the 3D printer and vinyl printer.
  • Designated volunteers must approve all member-supplied materials before they are used on machines to reduce the risk of damage to machines or harm to members within the Propeller.
  • The member is responsible to pay any costs for use of machines, materials, and supplies provided by Propeller, and for all loss or damage to Propeller property or clean-up expenses.
  • Propeller is not responsible if a project is destroyed, does not print correctly, or does not work. The member understands that Propeller is not responsible for any manufacturing defects or the quality of workmanship of any of the tools, materials, or equipment supplied by the Propeller.
  • Members will not modify the Propeller’s hardware or software, or install new programs onto the computers.
  • Propeller equipment cannot be removed from the Propeller.
  • Propeller reserves the right to deny Propeller access if a member violates any part of the Propeller or any other Propeller policy, or for any other misuse of the space, as determined by Propeller Board of Directors.
  • Propeller is not responsible for any injuries caused by the improper use of equipment.
  • Firearms, deadly ordnance, knives, pepper spray and other weapons are prohibited. The only exception to this rule is the authorized equipment carried by law enforcement officers or utilized in the classroom training purposes.
  • Alcohol, non-prescription drugs, illegal intoxicants, tobacco products, and other controlled substances are prohibited on the property. Members who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol may not operated equipment.
  • The on-site manager, volunteer and/or Propeller Board of Directors reserves the right, after one verbal warning, to revoke membership privileges.  Flagrantly unsafe or abusive behavior may result in immediate revocation and removal from the premises.

 PROCEDURES

  1. The Propeller will be locked when not in use.
  2. Members are expected to clean up after themselves, including returning Propeller hardware and supplies to the proper storage area.
  3. When machines are out of order, a Propeller volunteer will attempt to contact members with reservations. This courtesy cannot be guaranteed.
  4. Reservations may be required for the certain equipment. Reservations may be extended at Propeller volunteer discretion if there is no waiting list. There is a 15-minute grace period before reservations are canceled.
  5. When reserving Propeller equipment, scheduled Propeller programs have priority, followed by members who have made a reservation ahead of time. If the equipment is not reserved, it will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.
  6. Any work saved on Propeller computers will be deleted once the computer is turned off and cannot be recovered. Members must save their files to an external storage device or online storage location.
  7. This space is provided to promote creativity, innovation, and technology education. Propeller encourages members to learn new skill sets in this space but does not promote running cottage industries due to extensive use and wear and tear on community equipment.
  8. Items not covered by these rules, or the written policies and procedures are at the discretion of the Propeller Board of Directors.

The Columbus Propeller reserves the right to change this policy at any time.
